Celebration of St. Anthony the Abbot

January 16

Every year on January 16, the tradition of St Anthony the Abbot is renewed with street theatre plays and bundle of fired canes in the honour of the saint. Since the early afternoon of January 16, one of the most impressive manifestation of the folk tradition of Abruzzo takes shape on all the piedmont territory of Majelletta. It is like if St. Anthony belonged to all the big community of Abruzzo. In these days the villages at the feet of Majella welcome many guests and curious people from the bigger centres, always in search of what brings genuine pleasure and happiness. It happens in Roccamontepiano, Casacanditella, Pretoro, Casalincontrada with their several traditions, the floats' parade, and the allegoric representations of the life of the saint. Moreover, with no doubts, Fara Filorum Petri is the veritable capital city of bonfires (Farchie). From this village, the traditional bonfires have reached also the neighbouring centres to honour the Egyptian saint, whose legend describes him as being the protector of all animals and guardian of the fire. The legend of Fara narrates that St. Antony the Abbot stopped the advance of the French army in 1799, lighting big oaks in locality La Selva. That is the reason why the bonfires belong to the life of all quarters of the Majella's village: this event represents a commemorative occasion to thank the saint and a way to stay, to drink, eat and sing all together, and to enjoy the feast discovering the value of what is genuine in the life of these bourgs of Abruzzo. In Roccamontepiano, the tradition of "Sant'Antonie" (local pronunciation) is played in the theatrical representation of the life of the saint, around a sacred fireplace or a bonfire lighted outdoor in a quarter. Considered as the protector of the animals, the celebrations of Abruzzo associated to his name have some elements in common such as the fires, the songs of alms, the dances and the wine and food offered by the participants. Obviously, the pork is the meat cooked for the celebration. All the elements of the sacred and profane world convoy in this celebration: now it is just about waiting January 16. The celebrations will take place on Saturday 14, inside the restaurant Brancaleone, in Roccamontepiano; the theatrical representation is set at 10.30 pm, while on Monday 16, at 6.30 pm, various quarters will light fires all around the village with songs, dances and food offered to the participants.
